April 6 - Harajuku, Meiji Jingu, Ueno
The first of the big torii in Meiji Jingu. The columns aren't made of a single tree trunk. From what I can see, they're constructed from many wedge-shaped pieces that run the full height of the column. Still very impressive - these columns are in the neighborhood of four feet in diameter at the bottom. It's rare to see torii that aren't painted bright red - these are completely unadorned, and it's great to see the bare wood, smooth and weathered.
