A model of a street in the Meiji era, roughly 1873-1912. This was when Edo became Tokyo, and the city was aggresively modernized. You can see Western-style construction using brick, and wider avenues. This was critical in the pursuit of building a city that was more resistant to widespread fires. Unfortunately, events in 1923 and 1945 would prove that destruction can often outpace construction. |
