This is a model reconstruction of a daimyo residence. The daimyo were the regional governors who answered to the shogun. They lived in Edo in alternating years, and their families resided in Edo full-time. This kept their loyalty to the Shogun strong, and their control in their domains less so. For many years, this was a very successful system for ensuring the unity of the country and the Shogun's control over all its lands. |
