In the Edo-Tokyo Museum, a view of the reconstructed Nihombashi. "Nihombashi" means Japan Bridge, and this is an apt description. It was esssentially the center of all Japan. All of the roads that led out of Edo (including the Tokaido) began here. And to this day, when the government measures the distance from anywhere to Tokyo, the site of the original Nihombashi is the point they measure to. This reconstruction represents half the length of the original bridge, which is made mostly of Japanese cypress. |
